Amazon Linux Upgrade Woes

Upgraded the OS on one of my Amazon server instances today. After rebooting I had the unpleasant experience of seeing my rpc.rstatd monitoring daemon stop functioning.

It turns out that AWS changed the actual kernel version for this release, I guess to “celebrate” the fact that it is no longer “beta”. The difficulty is that rpc.rstatd does some kernel-version-specific analysis for the disk subsystem. Since there was no case for Linux version 3.2 listed, the software would die. By checking /var/log/messages and using strace, it was clear that the source code would need to be patched.

The patch has been done, tested and uploaded. You may obtain a copy of it by clicking here: rpc.rstatd-4.0.1.tar.gz
