How To Show All Files in the MacOSX Finder

Published Date Author: , Posted June 30th, 2012 at 5:25:23pm

In Terminal, run the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

To make the command take effect, you need to restart the Finder. One way to do this is to hold down the Option key, then click and hold on the Finder icon in the Dock. When the contextual menu appears, select Relaunch and the Finder will restart.

(Tested under 10.6.8 Snow Leopard ONLY – YMMV!)

or just press shift+command+f in 10.7+

This displays a new finder window in the “All My Files” view, even if you have something else selected under “New Finder windows show” in your Finder Preferences. If there is a way to change this default, please share. IMO, this is another example of OS becoming more like the dub.

Thanks for many useful posts – especially the ~/.ssh/config example.
